About Iran

Iran - which means "Land of Aryans" officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia, comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq. miles). It is ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank. In the early 21st century the service sector contributed the largest percentage of the GDP, followed by industry (mining and manufacturing) and agriculture.

Iran's population is equivalent to 1.08% of the total world popluation and ranks number 17 in the list of countries by population.

The capital city of Iran is Tehran which means ''warm slope'' is the largest city, serving as the cultural, commercial, and inudstrial center of the nation. Iran is a major regional and middle power, exerting considerable influence in international energy security and the world economy through its large reserves of fossil fuels, which include the largest natural gas supply in the world and the fourth largest proven oil reserves. Iran pumps nearly 4 million barrels of oil each day. After oil, Iran's largest import commodity is carpets. Iran is China's most main abroad market, importing overseas project contracting, technology and sets of equipment.

Countries with a coastline on the Persian Gulf: Iran, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar on peninsula of the Saudi coast, Bahrain on an island, Kuwait, and the Iraq in the northwest. And there are also various small islands lie within the Persian Gulf.
